religions did not distinguish between himself and his God. Just as, in our own Bible, Adam and Eve walked alongside God in the Garden of Eden, primitive humans were in direct communion with the forces of nature.
Part of a baby's natural development is to realize its separateness. The child learns to speak, and, as any parent will tell you, the most common word in its early vocabulary is "no!" The child celebrates and enforces its individuality. When the child gets to nursery school, the new word is "mine" as the child learns to fight over toys with its peers. Part of what makes all this safe to do is the presence of strong parents who provide boundaries, rules, and the resulting sense of security. The big people serve as much-needed role models for the now self-determining child.
